When is the Best Time for a Tune-up?

Colorado can have extreme winters and dry summers causing extra wear and tear on your entire garage door system. Every door is different due to its age, usage, location such as in direct sunlight, or type of door all should come into consideration when deciding how often or when a tune up service is right for you. We generally recommend our clients to aim for having a minimum of one tune up a year either in spring or fall as the harsher temperatures get closer to arriving, beating out the cold winter nights and long, hot summer days. Another important consideration to keep in mind is the frequency of usage for your garage door and opener. If your door operates on a higher usage cycle, which consists of one up movement and one down movement, then you should consider having your door tuned up bi-annually to help ensure you stay on top of the maintenance. The average homeowner uses their garage 2-4 cycles a day, anything more is generally considered high usage requiring more maintenance to keep your door and opener running smoothly and problem free. Additionally you should consider the age of your door when deciding how often to have a tune up completed. The older your garage door is, the more maintenance is generally required as different parts and components of the entire assembly begin to age and wear out. With more frequent tune ups throughout the year the lower chance is your door breaks unexpectedly, as well as its easier to plan/budget ahead for upcoming maintenance needed lowering your chances of the costly repairs. Lastly, a few additional things to consider when deciding if a tune up is right for you or how often to schedule your tune up is if you’ve haven't had any service for your door in over a year, you notice your door squealing, squeaking during opening or closing, or your garage door is sticking or jerking during opening.

FAQs
  • What is a garage door tune up?

Our tune up includes the following; safety & operational inspection, safety test performed, hardware tightening, minor adjustment if needed, lubrication, and a multi-point inspection report to keep for your records.

  • Why are garage door tune ups important?
    • Vibrations - When opening and closing a garage door the vibrations  from the motor operating the door, and also from the friction between the rails and rollers can lead to loose hard wear increasing the likelihood of failure or malfunction.
    • Noise - Garage Door tune-ups on a regular basis will not only keep your garage door working great but sounding great too. Rollers and hinges last longer and work quieter with annual or biannual lubrication and adjustments when needed for aging parts.
    • Weather - Colorado is known for its hot dry summers and freezing cold winters. Extreme temperatures affect all aspects of a garage door including; weather seals, hardware, springs, and motors.
    • Prevention - Having your garage door serviced regularly decreases the likelihood of untimely malfunctions or costly repairs. Annual inspections will help ensure you reach the life expectancy  of your garage door, opener, and springs.
  • Can I do my own tune up?

Homeowners can apply lubrication throughout the year to components as needed, and we recommended to our clients to keep an eye out for particular components of your garage door throughout the year such as hinges, rollers, cables, and any loud unusual noises. Call us experts immediately if you notice anything out of place to further prevent costly repairs. However, it's best at least once a year to have an expert come out to verify your garage door is ready for its next year of life as majority garage door manufacturers recommend an annual tune up at minimum done by a professional garage door technician.

  • How often should I lubricate my garage door?

As your garage door and components age throughout the years we recommend to our clients to lubricate areas needed every 6 months if possible, but if not a minuim once a year.

  • Does routine maintenance increase the life of the opener and garage door?

Semi-annual or annual tune-ups (we refer to them as Garage Door Tune-Up) definitely can increase the life and functionality of your garage door.

Lubrication every 6 months improves the life of rollers, hinges, and springs by decreasing friction; this also decreases noise from aging hardware.

Most door manufacturers recommend annual lubrication and service from a trained garage door technician.
